Native Plant of the Month (August) – Swamp Rose Mallow

For our August native plant spotlight, we’re featuring the Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos). If you’ve ever encountered this plant with its strikingly large flowers, you might recognize it as a type of Hibiscus. Indeed, it’s one of three hibiscus species you’ll find at Wellfield Botanic Gardens. While you may be familiar with the tropical hibiscus species commonly seen in garden centers during spring, we showcase a large tropical hibiscus annually at Wellfield, currently adorning our Event Plaza near the fountain with its beautiful crimson blooms that grace the summer season. Another hibiscus species found in several locations at Wellfield is the Rose of Sharon, although it’s not native to our region. Many are surprised to learn that the Swamp Rose Mallow is native, thriving even in Elkhart County.

Native Plant of the Month (August) – Swamp Rose Mallow

Swamp Rose Mallow possesses several unique characteristics that we’d like to highlight this month. Its large flowers typically bloom in late summer, exhibiting hues ranging from pink to red to purple, with some variants boasting white flowers with colored centers. Unlike what one might expect, its main pollinators are solitary bees rather than the honey bees often associated with pollination. The shape and color of its leaves vary among cultivars, with more natural specimens sporting green, unlobed leaves, while deeply lobed and colorful leaf cultivars can be found in our Bridge Garden. Even before its stunning flowers emerge, the foliage alone merits attention in any garden setting.

Native to the eastern half of the U.S., Swamp Rose Mallow thrives in environments with ample water and sunlight, hence its preference for swamp-like conditions. Despite its affinity for water, it exhibits resilience, as demonstrated by its ability to tolerate early drought conditions this year with minimal stress. Requiring minimal care, these plants bloom year after year, adding vibrancy to August landscapes with little maintenance needed. If you visit Wellfield to admire our Swamp Rose Mallow specimens, you’ll find additional information displayed alongside some of our plants. Consider incorporating this native beauty into your garden for a burst of color and ecological value.
